5 Things You MUST Do If You Are Planning to Take GLP-1s
Rising Sun Community Fitness | East Nashville’s Functional Fitness Home
GLP-1 medications — think semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) — are everywhere right now, and for good reason. They work. Clinical trials have shown meaningful, sustained weight loss results that were nearly impossible to achieve with diet alone for many people. If you’re considering going this route, we’re not here to talk you out of it or lecture you about the “right” way to lose weight.
But we are here to be straight with you about something most people don’t hear until they’re already a few months in:
The medication does the heavy lifting on appetite. What you do with that opportunity determines whether you end up healthier — or just lighter.
There’s a big difference between the two. Here are the five things you absolutely must do if you’re planning to start a GLP-1.
1. Start Resistance Training Before You Lose the Weight
This one is non-negotiable, and it’s the one most people skip.
GLP-1s create a significant caloric deficit by suppressing appetite. Your body is going to lose weight — but without a resistance training stimulus, a meaningful portion of that weight will come from muscle, not just fat. Research has consistently shown that during rapid weight loss, lean muscle mass is at serious risk of being broken down along with fat tissue. This is called muscle wasting, and it’s the reason people who lose large amounts of weight quickly — through any method — sometimes end up “skinny fat”: low on the scale, but soft, weak, and metabolically worse off than before.
Functional fitness training — the kind we do at Rising Sun — is specifically built to preserve and build lean muscle through compound, full-body movements. Squats, deadlifts, presses, pulls, carries. These movements send a clear signal to your body: keep the muscle, we’re using it.
The goal isn’t to be thin. The goal is to be strong, capable, and metabolically healthy. The medication can help you get there — but only if you’re lifting.
Action step: If you’re not already training consistently, start now — ideally two to four weeks before your first dose. Don’t wait until you “feel ready.” The window matters.
2. Prioritize Protein Like It’s Your Job
When you’re eating significantly less food (which you will be — that’s the point of the medication), every bite has to count. And the macronutrient that matters most during weight loss is protein.
Here’s the simple version: protein is the raw material your body uses to build and maintain muscle. If you’re eating 1,200–1,500 calories a day because semaglutide has completely killed your appetite, but only a fraction of that is protein, you are setting yourself up for the muscle loss scenario described above.
A solid target for someone in an active weight loss phase is 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. That sounds like a lot when your appetite is suppressed — and it is a lot — which is exactly why you have to be intentional about it.
Lean meats, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and quality protein shakes are your best friends right now. Learn what 30–40 grams of protein actually looks like on a plate, and build your meals around that number first. Vegetables and healthy fats fill in the rest. Treat protein like the anchor of every meal — not an afterthought.
This is actually one of the core principles of Zone Diet-style eating: structure each meal around protein first, add favorable carbohydrates, and balance with fat. GLP-1 medications make it easier to eat less. A smart nutrition framework makes sure what you do eat is actually working for you.
Action step: Track your protein for two weeks. Not calories — just protein. You’ll likely be shocked at how low you’re running, and that awareness alone will change how you eat.
3. Protect Your Bone Density
Muscle isn’t the only thing at risk during rapid weight loss — bone density is too. This is a less talked-about consequence of aggressive caloric restriction, and it’s especially relevant for women, older adults, and anyone who has been sedentary for a long time.
Bones respond to mechanical load. When you carry your bodyweight, lift heavy things, and move under resistance, your bones adapt by becoming denser and stronger. When you lose weight rapidly without that mechanical loading, bones can actually decrease in density over time — leaving you at higher risk for stress fractures and long-term osteoporosis.
The fix is the same as the muscle fix: lift weights, and do it consistently. Impact-based and load-bearing exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for preserving bone density during a weight loss phase.
Don’t underestimate this one. Muscle is visible. Bones are not — and by the time bone density issues show up, they’re much harder to reverse.
Action step: Add some jumping, loaded carries, and high-rep lower body work to your training. Functional fitness programming naturally includes all of these.
4. Get Accountability and Structure Around Your Training
GLP-1 medications suppress your appetite. They do not suppress the mental patterns, lifestyle habits, or scheduling barriers that kept you from exercising consistently before.
We’ve worked with a lot of people over the years who have started these medications with the best intentions and genuinely great momentum — and then life happened. The medication made eating easy to manage. The training got sporadic. The structure wasn’t there.
This is where community-based training changes everything. When you have a class to show up to, a coach who knows your name, and a group of people working alongside you, the activation energy to get in the door drops dramatically. You stop relying on motivation — which is unreliable — and start relying on structure and social accountability, which are not.
At Rising Sun, our group fitness classes are designed to meet you exactly where you are. We’ve coached brand-new athletes alongside seasoned ones in the same class for years. Our coaches will help you scale every workout to your current fitness level so you’re always challenged but never crushed. And our personal training and small group training options are there if you want more individualized attention during a transformative period in your health journey.
Action step: Book a No-Sweat Intro with us. It’s a free, no-pressure conversation about your goals, your current fitness level, and what program makes the most sense for where you’re starting. You don’t have to figure this out alone.
5. Think Long-Term, Not Just About the Scale
GLP-1 medications work. But they are a tool, not a destination.
Many people who stop taking them without having built sustainable fitness habits and nutritional patterns see significant weight regain. This isn’t a personal failure — it’s a physiological reality. The medication changes your appetite set point while you’re on it. What happens when you stop depends almost entirely on what you built while you were on it.
The best possible outcome of a GLP-1 journey is this: you lose the weight, you build muscle and strength through consistent training, you develop a sustainable eating framework, and by the time you taper off the medication, your lifestyle has caught up to your goals. The habits are locked in. The fitness is built. The metabolism is supported.
That outcome is 100% achievable — but only if you treat the medication as a head start, not a finish line.
The people we’ve seen thrive on GLP-1s are the ones who used the reduced appetite as an opportunity to build real habits. They ate better, trained harder, and showed up consistently. The scale was just one part of the story.
Action step: Set performance goals, not just weight goals. What do you want to be able to do six months from now? Pick up your kids without your back hurting? Do your first pull-up? Run a 5K? Complete a functional fitness benchmark workout? Write it down, tell your coach, and train toward it. Weight loss will be a byproduct.
The Bottom Line
GLP-1 medications can be a genuinely powerful tool for people who have struggled to lose weight. We respect that decision, and we want to help you make the most of it.
But the medication handles the appetite. You have to handle the training.
