Fill out the form to get started
Walking into a CrossFit box for the first time can feel intimidating. Between the barbells, kettlebells, and that mysterious piece of equipment in the corner, there’s a lot to take in. But beyond learning the movements and mastering your form, there’s another crucial aspect of CrossFit culture that every member should understand: gym etiquette.
At CrossFit Rising Sun, we’ve built our community on mutual respect, support, and shared sweat equity. These unwritten rules help maintain the positive atmosphere that makes our box feel like home.
Respect the Equipment (And Put It Back!)
This one seems obvious, but it’s worth emphasizing. Always return equipment to its designated spot after use. That means re-racking plates in order from heaviest to lightest, returning dumbbells to their proper slots, and coiling up jump ropes. Your fellow athletes shouldn’t have to hunt for equipment because you left it scattered around the floor.
Clean your equipment too. Wipe down barbells, mats, and any surface you’ve sweated on. We’re all here to get dirty, but nobody wants to use equipment covered in someone else’s sweat. *And please remember to always avoid dropping an empty barbell from any height when possible (the fastest way to make a coach cringe!) This can damage the bearings and the barbell will no longer spin / perform properly.
Share the Space
CrossFit workouts can get intense, and sometimes we need room to move. Be aware of your surroundings and respect others’ workout space. If someone is in the middle of a heavy lift, give them plenty of room and avoid walking in front of them. During partner workouts, communicate clearly about space needs and be willing to adjust.
When it’s busy, be flexible about your preferred spot in the gym. That corner you love might need to be shared today.
Cheer Each Other On
One of the most beautiful aspects of CrossFit culture is how we celebrate each other’s victories. Whether someone is hitting a new PR or struggling through their first pull-up, your encouragement matters. A simple “you’ve got this!” or “nice job!” can make someone’s entire day.
But remember to read the room. Some people prefer quiet focus during lifts, while others thrive on vocal support. Pay attention to individual preferences and respect them.
Show Up On Time (And Stay Until the End)
Arriving late disrupts the flow of class and can be unsafe if you miss the warm-up. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to get settled and mentally prepared. Similarly, don’t bolt immediately after the workout. Help with equipment cleanup and take time to cool down properly.
Come Prepared and Present
Leave the headphones at home during classes. CrossFit is a community experience where you need to hear coaching cues, safety instructions, and your fellow athletes. Being plugged in isolates you from the group dynamic that makes CrossFit special.
Personal hygiene matters too. Show up in clean workout clothes and please wear deodorant. We’re all going to sweat together, but starting fresh shows respect for your workout partners who’ll be sharing the same air space.
Leave Your Ego at the Door
CrossFit is about personal improvement, not showing off. Scale workouts appropriately for your fitness level, ask for help when you need it, and celebrate progress over perfection. The person next to you might be lifting heavier weights, but they’ve likely been training longer. Focus on your own journey.
Communication is Key
If you’re new, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Experienced members and coaches are usually happy to help. If you’re struggling with a movement or unsure about scaling, speak up. Your safety and success are everyone’s priority.
At CrossFit Rising Sun, these principles aren’t just rules—they’re the foundation of our community. When everyone follows these guidelines, we create an environment where every member can thrive, regardless of their fitness level or experience.
