Strong glutes aren’t just about looking good in your workout gear – they’re the powerhouse behind explosive movements, injury prevention, and overall athletic performance. At CrossFit Rising Sun, we see firsthand how developing bulletproof glutes transforms our members’ lifting, running, and daily movement patterns.
Why Glute Strength Matters
Your glutes are your body’s largest muscle group and play a crucial role in hip extension, stabilization, and power generation. Weak glutes can lead to lower back pain, knee issues, and poor performance in movements like deadlifts, squats, and box jumps. The good news? With the right accessory work, you can build the strong, functional glutes that will elevate your entire fitness game.
Top 5 Glute-Building Accessory Movements
1. Hip Thrusts The king of glute activation. Start with bodyweight and progress to barbell hip thrusts. Focus on squeezing your glutes at the top and controlling the descent. Aim for 3 sets of 12-15 reps.
2. Bulgarian Split Squats This unilateral movement targets glute strength while improving balance and addressing imbalances between legs. Keep your torso upright and drive through your front heel. Perform 3 sets of 10 per leg.
3. Clamshells with Resistance Bands Perfect for activating the often-neglected glute medius. Lie on your side with a band around your knees and focus on controlled movement. Great for warm-ups or accessory work – 2 sets of 15 per side.
4. Single-Leg Romanian Deadlifts Build posterior chain strength while challenging stability. Start with bodyweight and progress to holding a dumbbell or kettlebell. Focus on the hip hinge pattern and feeling the stretch in your hamstrings and glutes.
5. Monster Walks Using a resistance band around your ankles, take controlled steps in multiple directions. This movement builds glute strength in the frontal plane, which many traditional exercises miss.
Programming Your Glute Work
Incorporate 2-3 of these movements into your routine 2-3 times per week. Start with bodyweight versions and gradually add resistance as you master the movement patterns. Remember, quality trumps quantity – focus on proper form and really feeling your glutes working.
