Understanding CrossFit’s “Girl” WODs – Why These Benchmark Workouts Matter
If you’ve been around CrossFit for any time, you’ve probably heard names like “Fran,” “Helen,” or “Grace” thrown around the gym. These aren’t just members – they’re some of CrossFit’s most famous benchmark workouts, known as the “Girl” WODs. At CrossFit Rising Sun in East Nashville, we regularly program these challenging workouts, and understanding their purpose can transform your fitness journey.
What Are Girl WODs?
The Girl WODs are a collection of benchmark workouts created by CrossFit founder Greg Glassman. Named after hurricanes (following the National Weather Service’s naming convention), these workouts are designed to be intense, memorable, and measurable. They serve as fitness tests that allow athletes to track their progress over time.
Why Do We Use Benchmark Workouts?
These workouts provide several key benefits for CrossFit athletes:
Progress Tracking: By repeating the same workout every few months, you can objectively measure improvements in strength, endurance, and technique.
Mental Toughness: Girl WODs are intentionally challenging, helping build the mental resilience needed for everyday life.
Community Connection: These workouts create shared experiences among CrossFit athletes worldwide, fostering a sense of belonging to something bigger.
Skill Assessment: They highlight areas needing improvement while celebrating strengths.
Spotlight: “Cindy” – A Classic Girl WOD
One of our favorite Girl WODs at CrossFit Rising Sun is “Cindy.” This workout perfectly embodies CrossFit’s emphasis on functional movements and can be scaled for any fitness level.

- Intermediate: Ring rows, regular push-ups, and full air squats
