What is hyrox-and why it’s taking the fitness world by storm

If you’ve spent any time in our gym over the last year, you’ve probably heard someone mention HYROX. Maybe you’ve seen the branded shirts, the training splits pinned to the whiteboard, or heard someone talking about their “compromised run.” So what exactly is this thing, and should you be training for it? Let’s break it down.

What Is HYROX?

HYROX is a global fitness racing series that combines running with functional work stations. Every race follows the same format: 8 x 1km runs, each followed by a functional exercise station. Those stations include things like SkiErg, sled pushes and pulls, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carries, sandbag lunges, and wall balls. Same distances, same stations, same order — every single race, everywhere in the world.

That consistency is part of the appeal. Unlike a CrossFit competition with surprise workouts, HYROX athletes know exactly what they’re training for. You can walk in with a race plan and a pacing strategy, and you can compare your time against people training in a different city, gym, or country.

Why Has It Gotten So Popular?

A few reasons. First, it’s approachable. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to sign up — there are age divisions, a doubles format, and a relay option, so people of very different fitness levels can toe the same starting line. Second, the format rewards general fitness rather than one narrow skill. You can’t hide a weakness — if your running is weak, it shows; if your grip gives out on the farmer’s carry, it shows. That “no weak links” quality appeals to people who like being tested honestly. Third, it’s simply well produced — big venues, good energy, medals, community — it feels like an event, not just a workout.

The Upside of Training Specifically for HYROX

Training with HYROX in mind teaches you to run under fatigue, transition quickly between modalities, and pace smart instead of just going hard until you blow up. It builds real work capacity and mental toughness. If your goal is a strong race day, race-specific practice — running off the sled, running off wall balls — is genuinely valuable and hard to replace.

The Downside of Training Exclusively for HYROX

Here’s the catch: if all you ever do is HYROX-style training, you can plateau — or even regress — in the qualities that actually make you better at HYROX. Constantly training in a fatigued, moderate-intensity zone doesn’t build much raw strength, doesn’t build much top-end aerobic capacity, and doesn’t address mobility or movement quality. Overuse patterns creep in too, since you’re repeating the same movement patterns week after week. Athletes who only train the race format often hit a ceiling — they can survive the event, but they can’t get meaningfully faster because they never built the underlying engine or strength to draw from.

Why a Complete Program Wins

This is exactly why we build our programming the way we do. A well-rounded strength and conditioning approach — heavy lifting, aerobic base building, mobility work, and varied conditioning — builds the raw materials: strength, power, aerobic capacity, and durability. Then we layer in HYROX-specific work — race pacing, station transitions, running under fatigue — to teach your body how to express that fitness in the specific format of the race.

Think of it like this: general training builds the engine. Specific training teaches you how to drive it in that particular race. You need both. Athletes who spend months building real strength and aerobic capacity, then sharpen with HYROX-specific sessions closer to race day, consistently outperform athletes who only ever did the race format.

Bottom Line

HYROX is a fantastic goal to chase, and we love helping our members train for it. But the smartest path there isn’t doing HYROX workouts every single day — it’s building a complete, well-rounded fitness base and then sharpening it with race-specific work as your event approaches. That’s how you show up on race day faster, stronger, and more durable.
